The LEDLenser Wartrail challenge presented by Fluid Kayaks is now open for the maverick, crazy, brave-hearted, extreme multi-sport athlete. Utilizing an extreme adventure sports terrain in the South African heartland – the North Eastern Cape – a new dimension in adventure sports opens to reveal a balanced multi- sports adventure.
The Wartrail Challenge consists of a 265 km route: The event itinerary is as follows: Registration: at the Lady Grey Country Club. Race briefing: to start at the Country Club.
Stage 1 – 56km (Part Skyrun Route): 04h00 Start in Lady Grey, from the Lady Grey City Centre (in front of the Mountain View Country Inn and ending at Balloch via the Witteberge / Drakensberg mountain ridge-line) following the Herschel border fence.
Stage 2 – 118 km mountain bike:

Stage 3 – 65km canoe paddle: 06h00 Start from Mdlokovana to Aliwal North. Easy rapids depending on the strength of the river for first 10 km, otherwise a long flat hard paddle to the Riverside Lodge. The finish is at the Hertzog Bridge in Aliwal North.
Wartrail Challenge may be entered doing a SINGLE LEG or as a relay event of three members, with one member for each Stage OR as pairs (paddling a K2). However, the SOLO challenge is the ultimate challenge, with one discipline per day in a totally self-sustainable event, meaning that each athlete or team will have to provide own back up, with vehicle, logistics and support crew. This year for the first time we will be offering a Non- Stop Wartrail for Teams of 2, 3 or 4.
The Non-Stop teams will be starting their adventure a day later than the Wartrail staged athletes and we hope to meet up with them on the paddle leg. Their adventure is based on the principles of adventure racing with them having to clip CP’s on route and their seconds helping them at transition. Tactics will play a major role in their event but more on this at race briefing.
This means teams of two, 3 or 4 will complete a 60-kilometre mountain run, a 120-kilometre MTB ride and a 65-kilometre paddle all back-to-back in an Adventure Race style event.
The race start line will open from 5am on the morning of 19th March and teams must decide what time to leave in order to plan their race and avoid being caught in the dark zone before the paddle leg. The Start line will close at 11am on the same morning. Team’s time starts only once they set off from Lady Grey (cross the start line) and will be accumulative until they cross the finish line in Aliwal North having covered over 270km. There will be a Dark zone in place up to 6.30am on Monday morning for the paddle leg, which starts at Mdlokovana and teams have until 8.00 am that morning to be on the river. Teams will be able to be seconded at the Transition Zones at Balloch and Lady Grey Country Club as well as CP7, CP9 and CP10 of the bike Leg. Race registration will be at the Lady Grey Country Club on Sat from 3 pm followed by race briefing Sat evening at 6pm and then Dinner.
